Page 2(?) Graph

I am confused by the Grid Numbers on the graph and the number by the last blue line???  Also, How do I get to the other comments for this (and other) articles???

I am all here because ...

  I am not all there.

The graph on page 2 is primarily for spnsors.

It is useful for us readers as an FYI, but the big reason is a quick reference for sponsors to let them know how many people check out the magazine each month.  It tells the advertiser how many people potentially see their ad each month, and shows how MRH has grown during it's existance.

To answer your second question, each time a new issue comes out, the staff starts a thread for every article and column in the mag.  If you click on the link to leave a comment about any article in the mag. the link will take you to the thread for that article.  If you do as I do and open the web site to "recent posts" each time you visit, any of the articles that have new posts will show up as having new posts since you last visited.

Oops...

One page 2 the graph is intended to show the growth MRH has been experiencing in 'unique' visitors to the site each month from when Joe first stood up the MRH site in July 2008 to Jan 2011 (the last month for which we had numbers at press time).  Bear in mind that these are visits to the website, not unique readers of the magazine - those two numbers are a bit like apples and oranges, they're both fruit but different.

It appears that somehow the numbering along the left edge of the graph is incorrect. The line marked 100,000 should be 50,000 (we're good, but not that good) - in Jan 2011 we had 49,281 unique visitors to the MRH web site (if you visited 57 times in January, you still only count as 1 visit).  These numbers come from Google Analytics.

The graph does have some interesting information in it.  Looking at 2009, you can see web site visits peaking in Jan, Apr, Jul, and Oct - which happen to be the months the quarterly MRH issues shipped.  In 2010 the peaks were every other month on, you guessed it, the months when the bi-monthly MRH issues shipped. In 2011 we expect the dips to smooth out since we are shipping a new MRH every month.

Now we have access to the Feb data. There were 46,383 unique visitors in Feb. This might seem to be down a bit from Jan, but remember that Feb has 28 days while Jan has 31.  46,383 x 31/28 = 51308  which says that our average daily site traffic rose a bit (from 1589 per day in Jan to 1656 per day in Feb, a 4% increase).

To access the feedback for other articles, go to the first post on this page. Just below the thumbnail of the Editor's Soapbox article there is a horizontal bar with   "MRH 2011-03 - March 2011",  "up", and   "Staff notes -Where's the media?

Click on "up" to goto the master feedback page for March.

Another way to get there for the current issue is to goto the menus at the top of the page, select "Magazine" and click "Current Issue" (don't click any of the sub-menu items).  This will also take you to the master feedback page for March.

From the master feedback page, click on any of the list of articles to look at it's feedback.

Yet another way, is to click on the "reader feedback" button in any article while reading it online. This will pop a browser window and direct it to the feedback page for that article.

Cheers,

Charlie

Promotion?

Congrats, Charlie!  In the mainline churches we often joke that when a pastor is appointed or elected to the office of bishop, it's really a 'demotion', not a promotion.  Guess where the buck stops now!?!

Anyway, just curious - have the two layouts pictured alongside the article undergone any of the changes you are mentioning?  Has Tom Miller ripped out his Fn3 empire?

Also I think Operations is more like a "terminal" condition...

Promotion...

Promotion = twice as much to do for the same pay  < vbg>

Tom Miller is selling his Fn3 layout (along with his 7.5" gauge outdoor layout, house, and I think 20 acres). It's a gorgeouis location. If you have to ask, don't bother. Trains are extra. Tom isn't expecting the sale to go through for some time.

You'll be seeing more of Dave Adams On3 Durlin Branch in the April issue of MRH.

March issue comment

An interesting issue as always, with outstanding graphics and presentation.

I would probably have preferred not to have two articles on weathering wood, though as someone who has done some editorial work, I know that this kind of duplication often results when someone else doesn't meet a deadline.

More broadly, I have been catching up on back issues, earliest to latest, after a somewhat chaotic period in my life.  I am getting more familar with a lot of the navigation features -- some of which aren't intuitive and some of which aren't easy to use on my HP netbook.  But with this month's issue, I am comfortable enough to have been clicking through to your advertisers, something that will make them and you happy!

Keep up the great work!

Tell us more ...

Tell us more about the navigation features you don't find to be intuitive ... it always helps us to see things from an outsider's perspective so we can do better!

Charlie's first editorial

Hi Charlie,

Welcome as the new editor.  Keep the mag up to the past level and you will do a great job.  Regarding "having fun" your comments are very timely for me.  I currently have a layout that I have lost interest in and have been wondering what to do.  You gave me the answer.  Tear it down and start over.

Thanks,

Tony
