I enjoy posting to my blog but.....

Sometimes I see that it gets a lot of reads and no responses or very little response and that can be sort of disheartening.  I'm not looking for "atta boys" either.  In my mind, even a critical response is better than no response, especially if the criticism is constructive. It's just kind of weird to post something and see double or even triple digit reads and think to yourself  "geez...no one had anything to say at all...good or bad?"  It does keep me motivated when I post to my blog but I don't feel that things are quite as good around here as they are on some other sites. When I used to model N scale, there was an N scale exclusive site where I had long running "layout threads" with lots of activity and the input from folks spurred me on. Of course, I think I had a lot more friends there than I do here. Anyway, I'll keep posting about the progress of my new layout, responses or not.....

Blogs ...

... as a general rule, I avoid them; nothing personal (pun intended).

Having said that, I think(?) that blog posts on MRH appear as threads?  I will comment on a thread if I think I have something to add or have a question.

I think I know why?

I had a nice  answer all typed up for you and when I tried to post it the site wanted me to log in so it lost the post and I'm not going to re-type it :> ) Apparently the site is set to make one log in every day or two even if we never log out?  .........DaveB

Nope,

I'm logged in on two or three devices for weeks at a time. I get dropped maybe once a month. My wife will certainly attest to the urgency an active blog adds to a project. pqe

Hosting operating sessions

I totally agree hosting operating sessions on a regular basis certainly gets you working on the layout. Certainly those arriving first will walk around the layout to see if there is any thing new. It's not necessary to do a lot each month. I am not a modeler who builds models just for the sake of building models there has to be a reason for building a model. My layout is operations orientated so all models locos, rolling stock, or structures on my layout support operation. I think that most operators prefer operating on a sceniced layout to a "ply wood pacific". So get operating and that will motivate you to get some model building done as well.

Ops sessions and the "lone wolf"

I get that ops sessions can keep one motivated.  It's great impetus to know that new work is going to be viewed and critiqued about every week, month or whatever your ops schedule is.  The "lone wolf" doesn't really have that though.  Usually the only input I get is from non model rails like my wife or my daughter and son when I can drag them in the layout room to look at some new feature. At best I get something like " that's cool Dad" but nothing really constructive. That's why I get excited about posting to my blog after I've accomplished something. Model rails of all different disciplines and view points and from all over the world can give perspective on what you're doing.

Regards,

Michael
