MRH

We're getting a number of questions about the Make it run like a dream series. Since we're offering this series as a pre-order and we're asking people to trust us for up to 18 months for final volume to be released, here's some questions and answers about this series and what doing a pre-order means you get.

First question - modern diesel centric?

Q. Won't this series be mostly modern diesel centric, since that's what Joe Fugate models?

A. The trackwork volume will apply no matter what era or gauge you're modeling.

The rolling stock volume will also apply regardless of era although some of the insights may be a bit HO centric. That said, my grandson is modeling in N scale and I now have first hand experience with some N scale equipment as well so I want to keep non-HO standard gauge modeling in mind as I write these books. For example, I plan to talk about the sources for track and clearance gauges for all scales and how they're used to prevent issues from ever coming up.

The locos volume will have some diesel specific content, but I don't want to forget the steam side, so I plan to talk about prepping and tuning an SP4449 steamer for best operation. In the locos volume, the how-tos on DCC, power pickup, lighting, and sound shouldn't really be era-specific, although there may be some HO-centric thinking involved occassionally.

In short, I'm very aware of the other eras, scales, and gauges here as I write these and I will do my best to make the tips/techniques as broadly applicable as possible.

Finally, for those willing to pre-order, I plan to scour the web for the best insights on getting things to run well and plan to include links to as many other online resources on this topic as well.

Next question - What's in these sneak peeks exactly?

Q. What's in these sneak peeks exactly?

A. The first sneak peek is already available for download (has an outline of expected content) when you buy and next sneak peek is expected to be available soon - the first book writing is already well underway. I said monthly for the sneak peeks, but my intent is to under-promise and over-deliver if I can. Just look at MRH - it's totally free - would you expect a free publication to look like that?

Not only will I be putting down all my insights for making things run well, I am going to track down the best resources on the internet on this topic and make those available to you also.

I'm figuring the time-savings alone in having all these insights at your fingertips is worth the price. The way I'm thinking of this product offering is I'm seeing the customers as subscribing to 18 months of intense insight into getting your trains to run as good as possible.

And of course, as always, you can get a refund at any point if you feel it's just not been worth it for you.

Next question - Will this series be DCC centric?

Q. Will this series be DCC centric? What about DC and older locos?

A. DCC certainly isn't a cure-all for locos that don't run well on DC. So of course, there will be some discussion of how to get the loco to run decent regardless of DCC or DC. Lots of people have older locos (myself included), so I will certainly discuss that.

But in-depth loco mechanism tuning from soup-to-nuts could cover an entire volume all by itself. Consider we have 100 pages per book to cover all the points. I'm expecting some of the material that won't fit into the books will be available to those who purchase the books as supplemental material you can download.

I'm also expecting we may find a need for more volumes later if these first three do well, so there may be follow-on books with more that couldn't fit into the first three books.

I will do my best to cram in as much as I can and still make it easy to understand.

Is there a revised estimate

Is there a revised estimate for the release dates of the last 2 of the series?

Rolling stock book

Rolling stock book is now looking like July. My assumption is quality comes first, so I'm not rushing the book - but I do want to keep releasing sneak peeks so you can see there is progress. The loco book should be about six months later, which will put it circa January.
