I experimented with my wife's RubnBuff wax to create steel plates.

I just used my fingers to rub in it on the paper also paint to depict rust.

Just test fitting them and will later put some dents in them to show evidence of logs and drift wood colliding with them in the past.

Nice!

I used Rub n Buff to "paint" black locomotive trucks silver, and it did a very nice job of looking like weathered silver paint. I got that hint from a 20 year old MR article, btw.

This application looks pretty spectacular - how heavyweight of paper did you use?

Jeff,I'd like to see those

Jeff,

I'd like to see those trucks.

I used paper from a small white envelope.

My wife tells me it is a oil

My wife tells me it is a oil based paste for highlighting things to make them to look metal-like or aged.

She got it at a art craft store.

Rub N Buff

I've seen it at Michaels and Hobby Lobby. It's basically a wax that comes in various metallic colors for art projects.

There is also Amazon if you don't have other outlets nearby:

I believe I used Silver Leaf.

Here are three of the locomotives I used it to paint the trucks on, the trucks starting as standard Atlas black plastic ones:

Diesel trucks

Those look great Jeff.  How do you apply it to the smaller detailed areas like brake cylinders , brake shoes, etc.  .....DaveB

Jeff:

What DaveB said.

After seeing pics of your weathered looking silver trucks, while in Fort Smith today I'm stopping by Hobby Lobby to see if I can find Rub n' Buff Silver Leaf for a specific purpose: To do likewise on a Bachmann Rock Island GP7.

I would like to know how you got the tube paint down into crevices/etc.

Thanks for any input.

Um..uh...

Simply put - I don't remember. I did these several years ago.

I did do them in two batches, as i got the 2314 several years before the others, and I probably had, and used, micro-brushes on the second batch.

No Joy...

Hobby Lobby didn't have any Rub n' Buff products at all.

Finding Rub n' Buff

Andre,

You might try Michaels, JoAnn's Fabrics or even the local Ace Hardware.  I've seen it at all three.

Thanks Lou

Looks as if I'll be in FS again today. I'll check to see if we still have a Michael's. There's an Ace Hardware somewhere, I'm sure. Anyway... that's a couple more options!

Try Amazon

Amazon has Rub n Buff in several shades.  So does Walmart.  Google is your friend.

Amazon...

"Amazon has Rub n Buff in several shades."

That's good, but I'll also have to pay shipping, which is now about as much as a single tube of artist paint. SO, that tube of paint from Amazon will cost double what it will be here if I can source regionally.

I'm hoping to source regionally since I'm only interested in 1 tube of Silver Leaf. I ran out of time today and didn't make it Michael's or Ace, so there's still those two options.

I'll check our Walmart here in my town next time I'm there. Hopefully they still have a "artists" section back in whatever remains of the crafts department, and again, hopefully, they'll have Rub n' Buff Silver Leaf, but I'm not going to hold my breath.

Walmart

Is it possible to order online for store pickup?  Would save worrying about whether the store has it in stock.

Other sources

Some Lowe's and Home Depot stores stock it, and some Do I Best hardware stores.

I like the Pewter color for hopper and gondola interiors, and other wear points.

I have to say……

…….that is a very realistic looking steel plate, Deem!  I will have to add this stuff to my collection of pan pastels, chalks and weathering pencils.  Thanks for sharing.

Peter, I'm surprised myself

Peter,

I'm surprised myself how it came out. I just winged it.

Might be able to make steel plates for a jib crane.

Other alternatives

In case any of you aren't aware; Hobby Lobby sells scrapbook papers in metallic finishes that would work quite well to simulate steel plating.

Also, they offer crinkled paper sheets in both shades of pewter and rust colors which after cut into strips of various scale widths & lengths can simulate scrap metal for either gondola car loads or decopaged onto a dome/pile-shaped & painted styrofoam base for a scrap pile in a salvage yard.

Metal plates

This technique could also be used to make the steel plates they used to lay down to connect boxcars on adjacent tracks to each other and to a freight house ...DaveB
