This came up somewhere else

This came up somewhere else and it is important to keep this note fresh;

Any wall mounted shelf is in effect a cantilever; the bulk of the downforce is not spread through the cleat, but through the topmost screws.  As such, if you put a 2x4 on your wall, and it extended from the deck surface to the floor, you had better have something in the top that is solid or it will all fall down!!

Those braces looked nice.  The engineered lumber is also nice; the local club uses two 15 foot I beams under the main section now.  The bonus is a total of 6 legs and that's it!!

Lovin' the BCSJ construction updates

Charlie,

Thanks for the progress shots on the new peninsula and further explanation of the shelving around the wall.  Always great to see the guts underneath a layout, especially one that allows such a clean line and room between the decks.

Knowing you have to meet publishing deadlines, even digital publishing, I'm just curious about when the peninsula shots were actually taken and where the progress sits presently?  Having the "Op Sessions" DVD's, I can't wait to see the layout extended and in action.

Another excellent article with great photos and informative video.  I could not find mention of the animation sequences - I assume they are from a commericial layout program.  I like views of  benchwork construction more than beauty-shots of scenery.  Although I will never have occasion to use them I would like to see more details on the use of masonite splines.

Animations

I did the animation sequences using 3rd Planit. The layout was already in that format so it saved me having to re-build the design elsewhere. 3pi can now export video clips and I made use of that feature.

UP CREEK - GREAT

I have always wondered about cantilever installations, as I am planning to do this in my garage.  Great tips.  Having a shallow backdrop is no problem as long as you are using photos and building fronts.

Layout building and construction tips

Another great "how-to" - yet more food for thought on building shelf type round the walls layouts - which is what my next layout will be (I hope).
